He is a theatrologist and culture expert dealing with theatre and spectacles of the 20th and 21st century, in particular with carnival. He works at the Institute of Polish Culture of the University of Warsaw. Member of the Committee of Cultural Studies at the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Polish Cultural Studies Society and the International Hermann Hesse Society. President of the Polish Theatre Research Society (since 2012). He is the co-author of academic textbooks Teatr w kulturze (1991) and Antropologia widowisk (2005) and author of books: Wieża Hölderlina i inne miejsca (2000), Karnawały w kulturze (2005), Struktura w antystrukturze. Szkice o karnawale i teatrze (2013), W poszukiwaniu stylu. Teatr Narodowy 1924-1939 (2015). From 2015 to 2021, he headed the NCN research project Maska w kulturze współczesnej Europy: obrzęd – karnawał – teatr – zabawa – sztuka, which included the publications: Paradoksy maski.
